Goodbye Artix ... ?

What was once that felt like a new building now has its paint peeling away. I thought I'd be here for a long time, but the cracks are beginning to show.

I should start by saying, this is a good distro and it has served me well. But, I'm starting to see that this isn't maintained as well as it could be. No fault of the maintainers, they probably don't have the help or the time.

Artix is leaving XLibre and going back to Xorg. I don't know if they will ever bring back XLibre.

You can read more about it here: https://artixlinux.org/#XLibre_support_discontinued

For some, no big deal.
For others, this could be a deal breaker.

I'm in the latter here. I think XLibre has picked up the slack where Xorg kind of just left it in maintenance mode.

I've had no issues with XLibre, it's always worked great. It's snappy and fast and I've not experienced the dreaded screen tearing of the days of Xorg. TBH, I don't know if Xorg has screen tearing anymore since I've been on XLibre for some time now. And the issues for my uses with Wayland even Xorg is a better option.

I recently was test driving another distro and my framework laptop makes it easy to change the m2 SSD out. Just unscrew a few screws on the back then pop up the keyboard.

After test driving, I swapped out the drive for my Artix install. Only to be greeted with a BIOS screen 'Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed'

I figured if I plugged in my Artix live USB I could get back, I was correct. But after usage, the bluetooth went out and my mouse disconnected. Couldn't get it working, so I figured a reboot would solve any odd issues with the drivers or hardware.

Only to be greeted with the screen again...

Time For a Change...

First thought that popped into my head was I think it might be time to install Void again or something else. I have options...

Void has removed XLibre from their repos, but a 3rd Party GitHub Repo exists: https://github.com/xlibre-void/xlibre

Before distro switching, I wanted to make sure I had everything I needed off so I messed around with my laptop and found out that the key F3 lets me manually select the /boot/EFI/GRUB/grubx64.efi

That's when it dawned on me that the BIOS must be getting confused with the drive swaps and can't find the correct boot file.

I did manage to get Artix, but rebooting means needed to select the boot again. That's got me thinking about either Void or GhostBSD. I like GhostBSD and really want to give it a try again. For now, I will remain on Artix as I can still use XLibre with no problems, might have to avoid sudo pacman -Syu

I'm thinking I'll be daily driving GhostBSD soon...
